Ashok Ramani - Profile Of Classical Musicians

Ashok Ramani was born on 10th April in the year 1964. An accomplished Carnatic Vocal musician for over 20 years. Grandson of Tamil Composer Brahmashri Papanasam Siva. Sri Ashok Ramani has performed in all major Sabhas all over India and abroad. Presently he pursues a full-time career in music. His performances in Singapore, Malaysia, and Mauritius and at the Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival at Cleveland, Ohio were well received by rasikas.

Papanasam Ashok Ramani apart from his music training has also exhibited his brilliance in the field of academics. He has also worked as Deputy Manager, Materials in SPIC Heavy Chemicals Division, SPIC up to December in the year 2000.

Apart from concerts, Sri Ashok Ramani also specialises in lecture demonstrations and has provided many such lectures in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia & United States. Sri Ashok Ramani has also perfomred in many European countries like Germany, France, Switzerland & London.

Aside from his prowess as a vocalist, Ashok is an accomplished Mridangam artist also. He has been trained in the art of Mridangam by the renowned maestro Kumbakonam Rajappa Iyer. Ashok has accompanied many a senior artist of Carnatic music on the Mridangam on several occasions.

The artist was having a non-cooperative voice for sometime and it was perceptible that he was using the voice very carefully to avoid any aggravation of the condition. Mainly depending on brigas and with minimum karvais, Ashok could keep the voice under control. With a crisp alapana of Sarasangi ragam, Ashok presented Papanasam Sivan's composition ‘Karunai Varumo' in Adi Talam.

Acknowledging his talent All India Radio, Chennai has absorbed him as a Grade-A artist. At the time of execution Papanasam Ashok Ramani has been accompanied by senior artists on the violin, mridangam and other percussion instruments. He has carried through on Chennai Doordarshan, Sun TV, Raj TV, Star Vijay etc.

In the year 2001, Papanasam Ashok Ramani to his credit has composed, edited and released a CD-ROM ON PAPANASAM SIVAN. The CD was released at the occasion of Cleveland Thyagaraja Aradhana Festival. CD Rom is enriched with the "life history of Sivan, rare audio and visual clippings of Sivan" and for which by popular artists has sung over 50 songs. Some other audio Cassettes released by him were Sunaadha Sugandha under the banner of Sangeetha Cassettes, Saraagam Cassettes, AVM Double Album and HMV. Sunaadha Sugandha has been released as CD by Sangeetha.

Apart from all these things Papanasam Ashok Ramani has also serving as an active Committee member of Papanasam Sivan Rasikar Sangam. He has been given the responsibility for fixing and coordinating the artists and the programs. For the last 1 year, he has been convoked and carried on Music Forum of Papanasam Sivan Rasikar Sangam every week by coffering lectures/talk on Sivan`s contributions by eminent personalities.

Family Background

Papanasam Sivan was born in Chennai to R. Ramani & Dr. Rukmini Ramani, musician and teacher.

Musical Training

He commenced music training at a very young age with his mother Dr. Rukmini Ramani (daughter of Papanasam Sivan). Subsequently was under the tutelage of Dr. S. Ramanathan. Learnt from Calcutta K.S. Krishnamurthy & Bombay Ramachandran. A disciple of Palghat K.V. Narayanaswamy for over 17 years. Presently learning from Vidwan Sri. P.S. Narayanaswamy.

Educational Qualification & Sports

Ashok has a B.E. (Mech. Engg.) degree from Anna University in Chennai and even worked as an engineer until 2000.

Awards & Titles

He has been confered the title of “ISAI PAEROLI” by Karthik Fine Arts and also has the distinction of having won the “Youth Excellence” award by Maharajapuram Vishwanatha Iyer Trust in 1998. His other awards include “Isai Bharathi”, “Yuva Kala Bharathi”, the "Best Vocalist" award from the Indian Fine Arts Society in 1994 and the "Best Junior Vocalist" award from the Madras Music Academy in 1993.
