Prashanthini is the daughter of popular singer Malaysia Vasudevan and actually made her debut in 2001 when she was still in school, with Harris Jayaraj's 12B (the hit song Oru Punnagai Poove...). Her dad was very keen that she completes her education and learns the basics of music before becoming a full-fledged playback singer.
After completing her bachelor in computer science, she got married and seven years after 12B, her next song was in GV Prakash's Veyil (Iraivanai...). And from then, there was no looking back as she worked with Yuvan Shankar Raja. It was Harris Jayaraj's Mundhinam Partheney... in Vaaranam Aayiram that gave her a new lease of life.
The singer is all praise for Harris and GV Prakash, the people instrumental in her comeback. She owes a lot to Harris sir and GV, who is like a younger brother. She was lucky to get the right song, which is essential for that big break. For example, in Vizhi Moodi... (Ayan), she just did the female humming but the song became popular. She sang with SPB sir when she was six at a concert, and many years later, GV gave her an opportunity to sing Ayyayo... in Aadukalam with him.
The best thing that she has imbibed from her father is kelvi gnanam. Her father's greatest quality as a singer was kelvi gnanam (the power to understand and sing a song). She feels she has picked that up from him. Her favourite Malaysia Vasudevan song is the melody Vetti Veru Vaasam... from Mudhal Mariyadhai composed by Illaiyaraaja. She feels melody is everlasting; not surprising, as all her hit songs are melodies.
Her father has not only sung good melodies but also mass folk songs like Podhuvaga Enmanasu Thangam... in Rajini sir's Murattu Kaalai. She loves singing melodies which is her forte, though some day, she wants to sing a fast, peppy number.
