P B Srinivas
P B Srinivas - Profiles of Cine Play Back Singers

P B Srinivas joined classes when he was in Kakinada, but could not stand the way the varnam was butchered. So he quit and that was the end of formal learning. He was blessed with an excellent grasping power, which meant that he could reproduce any music he heard. His mother, who was highly impressed, encouraged him to sing more of classical music but his heart was in film music. His mother Seshagiri Amma had a sweet voice. She was a great influence on him. He was all the time singing the hits of Rafi, Manna Dey, Talat and Mukesh. Lata’s songs were a virtual education in modulation.

Completing B.Com was a pre-condition to his joining the orchestra of Veena vidwan and composer Emani Sankara Sastri. So he got his degree. He also started working with B.S.Kalla and got his first break when he rendered a couplet for the Hindi film, Mr. Sampath. On listening to it, S.S. Vasan had told Sastri that his voice was a good find for the industry. He entered the film world by singing a chorus in a Hindi film in 1952.

He sang his first solo song for Jathakam, a film simultaneously produced in Tamil and Telugu. The film in which Malayalam actor T.K. Balachandran played the lead role came out in 1953. R. Nagendra Rao gave him the first break. He got noticed and there was no looking back since then.
He has even recorded five songs in a single day. Only S. Janaki’s voice and his were used for the films Policekaran Magal and Sumaithangi, which was a record of sorts in those days. Writing has been his passion and has written more than two lakh songs of all kinds — ghazals, bhajans, verses, dohas, etc., in many languages.

He is fluent in eight languages including English and Urdu and has penned several ghazals in Tamil. The man with a melodious voice has rendered several hit numbers set to tunes by M S Viswanathan. In Malayalam, he has written a song, Jil Jil Kinare… for Thadakam. He has even composed a raga named Navaneetha Sumasudha. In Malayalam, he sang for the first time for Harischandra. He has sung many hit songs which include Mamalakalkappurathu…, Niranja Kannukalode…, Thulasi Vili Kelkku…, and Beliyalla Enikkuvendathu…..

He was the voice of the Tamil actor Romance King (Kadhal Mannan) Gemini Ganesan and has rendered some memorable hits like Nilavae Ennidam…., En aruhe nee irunthaal iyarkai ellaam...., Inbam pongum vennilaa veesuthe, Azhagiya mithilai nagarinile…., Enthan paruvaththin kelvikku pathil enna…, Nenjaththil iruppathu…., Yaar yaar yaar aval yaaro…., Raaja raajasri raajan vanthaan….., etc. He has sung in Kannada, Tamil, and Telugu, he is most well known for his melodious playback singing in the Kannada film industry for Rajkumar.

PBS is popular in Hindi through Main Bhi Ladki Hun... remake of Naamum oru penn songs like Chanda Se Hoga Wo Pyara...., Phulon Se Hoga Wo Nyaara..., a duet with Lata that took him to pinnacle of glory.
