Alka Yagnik is an Indian singer and one of the best playback singers in Hindi. She has sung songs for more than 700 Indian films and has won Filmfare Best Female Playback Singer Award seven times. She was born on 20th March 1963 in Kolkata. She belongs to a family of music background. Her mother Subha Yagnik is also a singer. Alka Yagnik started to sing for Calcutta radio when she was just 6.

At her age of 10 she came to Bombay with her mother to establish her career as a child singer. But she has to wait till her voice matured. She was sent to music director Laxmikant by Raj Kapoor. He said that she should wait if she wanted to become a singer or she could continue her career as a dubbing artist. So she waited and entered the Bollywood again in eighties.

For the first time, she sang for the film Payal Ki Jhankaar in 1970 and then in the film Laawaris in 1981 and Hamari Bahu Alka in 1982. The song Ek Do Theen for the film Tezaab in the year 1988 gave her a big break. This song became a great hit and won her Filmfare Award. Qayamath Se Qayamath Tak also won her good name.

She has sung songs in many languages such as Hindi, Gujarati, Odia, Manipuri, Nepali, Rajasthani, Tamil, Malayalam, Punjabi, etc. She has worked with many music composers like Kalyanji-Anandji, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Anu Malik, A. R. Rahman, Himesh Reshammiya, etc. She works as judge in television singing talent competitions like Sa Re Ga Ma Pa.

Awards & Titles

She has won National Film Award twice for the films, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. She won Filmfare Best Playback Singer Award for the songs, Ek Do Teen, Choli Ke Peeche, Zara Tasweer Se Tu, Taal Se Taal, Dil Ne Yeh Kaha Hai Dil Se, O Re Chhori and Hum Tum. Other than this she has got so many other awards like Zee Cini Awards, Star Screen Awards, Global Indian Film Awards, etc. She was nominated for Filmfare Award eighteen times.
