Grace Karunas, career as a singer started at five at the CSI Church, Poonamallee. On the day of the contest, she was unable to finish the song having forgotten the last four lines. Everybody in the church asked her to stop. But she refused to do so without completing the song. The first prize went to a boy. But he said he would give it to the little girl who cried on the dais — it was none other than Grace. She was overwhelmed with joy when she received the prize.
Ever since that day she began singing in the church. Her father who had a fabulous voice never allowed her to sing film songs. For the first time in college, she sang ‘Poo Pookum Osai’ from the film “Minsara Kanavu” in an Inter College Competition, where Karunaas was the judge.
This was her first experience of light music. She won the award for the best female vocalist. Impressed, Karunaas requested her to sing for his albums. Later they got married. Her first film number was ‘Cheena Thana’ in Vasool Raja MBBS.
Her husband Karunaas acted in Vasool Raja MBBS. He asked director Charan to give her a chance to sing the track for ‘Cheena Thana’. When music director Bharadhwaj heard her, he was pleased. She sang the song but did not tell anyone about it. Finally, on the day of the audio release, popular names were present at the function.
Being new singers, they were asked to sing our respective songs. Charan called her up and said, “This song will be a big hit and bring you name and fame.” It was he who started calling her ‘Cheena Thana Grace’. When she saw the song on screen, she realised it had come out well. That one song made me popular. So far, she has sung nearly 40 songs in Tamil, Telugu and Kannada.
